Manitoba Buddhist Vihara

The Manitoba Buddhist Vihara was founded 30 years ago with the purpose of spreading the great teachings of the Buddha who was enlightened 2600 years ago. Our purpose is to provide authentic guidance to the community to enhance its peacefulness, mindfulness, strength and harmony based on the original teachings of the Buddha regardless of race, ethnicity or religion.

We introduce theoretical foundation of the teachings, meditation and mindfulness based on the Sri Lankan Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Manitoba Buddhist Vihara and Cultural Association (MBVCA) is a registered non-profit organization that was founded in the 1980s.

Our History

The Manitoba Buddhist Vihara and Cultural Association (MBVCA) was formally established on 7 March, 1999. However, the origins of the MBVCA is traced back to Dhamma classes conducted by Radhika Abeysekara to a small group of Buddhist children in the early 1990s. This small beginning evolved into the present MBVCA through Radhika’s, and many other Buddhist volunteers’, continued commitment and contributions.

In the early days, the Vietnamese Buddhist community in Winnipeg gracefully allowed the MBVCA to use their facility located at 650 Burrows Avenue on Sunday evenings for Dhamma classes conducted by volunteer teachers. In addition to regular Dhamma classes, special annual events such as Vesak Celebration were also held at this facility. This arrangement continued for a considerable period of time with the generosity of Vietnamese Buddhist community.

What We Do

We are more than happy to provide a wide range of different programs to our community weekly, monthly, and annually.  As our teachers are well trained in this practice they humbly provide guidance for meditation at any level, mindfulness training, spiritual counselling, chanting, sermons and all Buddhist customs, in order to enhance children’s, youth’s, and adults’ moral ethics and spirituality.
